Infiniti Q50

About to sign an order for a new car? You might want to see what’s around the corner first. Which? Car previews the major new cars soon to arrive in showrooms. Mention the name Infiniti to most people and you'll be met with a blank look. But the arrival of the Q50 means that may be about to change. Infiniti entered the UK market in 2008, yet despite its race-winning Red Bull F1 team, it remains a decidedly niche player. The Q50 is the Japanese brand's bid for the mainstream - a rival for the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS. The Q50 was on show at Geneva in two forms: a 359bhp petrol/electric hybrid and - the one everybody will buy - a 168bhp 2.2-litre diesel. CO2 emissions for the latter engine start from a lowly 115g/km, putting it within a stone's throw of BMW's 320d EfficientDynamics and the new Lexus IS 300h. Infiniti Q50 design details The new Q50 is handsome and nicely proportioned - if a little blander than some rivals. It also feels commendably spacious inside - not something you could say of Infiniti's mid-size EX 4x4. The technical highlight is the 'drive-by-wire' Direct Adaptive Steering system, which allows the driver the driver to configure steering feedback to his or her personal taste. Infiniti Q50 first drive soon We'll have more details on the Infiniti Q50 soon - including prices and a full first drive report. If it lives up to the promise of those sleek looks, the omens are good for Infiniti's new compact hatchback, which will be built at the Nissan factory in Sunderland. The Q50 will take on the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-class, potentially pushing Infiniti fully into the mainstream.
